Marty Supreme Review

is this ping pong movie really worth your time?

In this movie in the genre of drama, we follow a very arrogant man named Marty Mauser. This man only has eye for his career in ping pong or as it's also known tabletennis. We meet Marty working in his uncles shoe store when his girlfriend comes along. Marty who seems to be a genius shoe sales man chooses to go to the back of the store with her, but not to fit shoes. But it's not his passion so when he gets the chance to be promoted to manager he asks for his last paycheck. this paycheck will open the route for him to become supreme. After making a mistake he does not get the paycheck on time and commits armed robbery just to get it to get too the british open.

The relationship

At the very start when we meet Rachel we see that the love between Rachel en Marty is very passionate. Marty with only one goal in his mind does despite the passion not seem to actually care for her at all. All Marty Mauser wants is to be world champion tabletennis. Rachel seems to be a very sweet girl who is madly in love with Marty. The movie is set in 1952. The Jewish people just got their freedom back for 7 years after world war two. The world didn't forget and the japanese still have a travel ban. Marty and Rachel both being jewish and still young Marty at the age of 23 the age of rachel isn't mentioned but it is mentioned she is trying to get with Marty since she was eight. So we can assume, she is in her twenties as well. There is a third-party in this relationship Ira he is Rachels actual husband. This will have a proper role in the plot.

The sportsmanship

Along the movie we keep noticing Marty is narcistic , egoistic and a burden to everyone in his life. This is his character he seems to choose to act like this. But somehow even with the arrogance he wins our hearts and we want him to win. No matter how he treats the people around him you want him to become supreme in his sport. Marty Supreme is the kind of movie where in the first 15 minutes you are like what am I even watching ?, is this the end of the story? how are they going to make a story out of this?. Well let those qeustions come to you but keep paying attention one of the major plot points happens before the opening credits. The story isn't an biopic but it is based on a real man. The tabletennis champion Marty Reisman.

Conclusion

Marty Supreme is worth your time, if you love good storytelling and want a more grounded story for a change. No big and expensive cars , no over the top action with guns and violence. Just real people a real man struggling to become a champion in a sport that was only big in Japan at the time. Take your time to watch this movie and going in with an open mind this title deserve the category drama for sure. Maybe even the best drama movie in years if you would ask me. I will score it:
