Should you skip Back to Black?
A tragic story delivered like romance
We all love too see the stories behind the celebrities. Especially the ones who made it big when the world was against them. We saw Freddy leave heathrow, We saw Elvis arrested for acting like a decent human being and we saw people shooting at Bob Marley and the wailers for spreading love. Now it's Amy's turn. In the movie back to black we are supposed to learn more about her story but do we ?
Winehouse taken too literally?
When we are watching Back to Black the first second we see Amy she's smoking. At the dinner table with her family and guests she tries to grab a bottle of wine. Yeah everyone knows how she died but instead of deeply exploring why she became an addict or just deep diving in her singing career the director chose something else. The director went for full focus on her relationship with Blake and how she was drinking a lot. We see her get mad all the time, We see how she met Blake. This movie is taking the piss out of all her fans. I'm not even a fan and I'm offended by this movie. All we see her do is drink.
The problem child portrayal
The movie portrays 18-year old Amy Winehouse as every other problem child in London. Maybe at that age she was but according to the movie she was already heavily on her way to addiction. Her father or Mitch, after two hours it's still not clear to me if he is an overprotective dad or an overprotective cabdriver. Let's assume Mitch is her dad which makes the most sense in some way, within the entire movie he is way too protective. But the moment her first manager says she needs to go to rehab all the young lady has to do is say no? and Mitch agrees?. This must have been a very confusing moment for Mitch or his personality wasn't portrayed very well.
The biggest problem
As I already stated in the first section of this review the movie feels wrong. Where I as a lover of music and movies was expecting a journey through her career or at least a deeper view on her addiction. I was met with a romantic drama the entire movie focused on her relationship with Blake and how she scratched his face open when she was drunk. When the real trouble happens the movie is already over. I would recommend to not watch this movie if you ever sang along to Rehab. And I would recommend to not even think about watching it if you are an Amy Winehouse fan. As someone who grew up when she was getting big in the music world I could recognize all scenes that were related to paparazzi pics immediately, the production team on this movie failed to give us a full story. We wanted to know more on what drove her to sadly enough end up in the club of 27. 4/10
